Coloured Diamonds

Diamonds have always been the talk-of-the-town. It’s a gem that hasn’t lost its charm and is still valued as one of the most beautiful, expensive and charismatic gems in the world. But with a slight twist it can become even more fascinating.

Naturally coloured diamonds can come in steel grey, blue, yellow, orange, red, green, pink to purple and brown and black. The most valuable coloured diamonds are mined naturally but gemologists and jewelers offer artificially coloured diamonds through some alternative treatment processes.

These diamonds can come in white, blue, yellow, red, green, pink and purple. It comes as no surprise that people are going absolutely nuts over the attraction of such colours, which are often preferred over the traditional white and transparent kind.

The grading process is administered by different bodies around the world that provide grading tables used to classify diamonds. These are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), American Gem Society (AGS), International Diamond Council (IDC), and the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL).

Synthetic diamonds

In simple words, a synthetic diamond is a man made one, which has been cultivated, shaped, or coloured by a human or machine. Even though most diamonds are naturally found and mined, many scientists have found a way to manually create a diamond and these synthetic diamonds can almost appear as good as the natural ones.

Determining diamond colours

Colour shades can often be confusing. Each diamond usually consists of two colour shades, one primary and one secondary. The colour with the ‘ish’ on its end is the secondary one making the other a primary one. For instance, greenish blue means the diamond is predominately blue with minor strokes of green. If the diamond were named as brown red, then the piece is equally shaded in each colour.

So whichever you decide on you’ll be sure to sparkle on your next night out or special occasion!
