Children’s Face-Painting: Maintaining the Magic

Painting children’s faces is one of the most important and in-demand aspects of face painting. Whether you’re a beginner or a veteran face-painter, it doesn’t take long to realise that it can be difficult to find new and exciting face-painting designs for children. If it seems like everything has been done before, don’t fret; you’re not alone. Here are some tips on bringing creativity to face-painting designs for kids, along with some resources to help with tweaking and improving current designs.

One major tip is to think from the perspective of the children whose faces you’re going to be painting. Look at popular kids movies, TV shows, toys and cartoon characters for free inspiration. With such a variety of media available, you can easily find new designs.

Secondly, don’t forget what you have in front of you. If you have children, you can buy low-cost face paint and practice on your own children; alternatively, you could use a model or other family member. Once you have the character down, you can start putting twists and variations on the theme to create unique art.

In fact, it doesn’t hurt to practice variations on your normal stock designs, not just ones you find from children’s media. Some ideas: change colours, facial expressions or shapes or add flourishes with different painting techniques. Children will usually enjoy a twist on a normal design, but it’s always a good idea to ask first.

Make sure to give a child options. If they want a lion, do they want one roaring or a goofy cartoon animal? Do they want it with a golden mane or a purple one? It never hurts to ask – children will appreciate your consideration for their opinion.

Finally, remember that the ultimate aim of face-painting for children is to give the child something they’ll enjoy. This means that your designs don’t have to be realistic, as long as they’re creative and fun. The only limitation is your own imagination – listen to kids, get inspiration from things children like and always be looking for tweaks and new additions to your designs, and both you and the children will love your work.
