The Palm House Christmas Fair 2015

Last week’s highlight for us was the Artisan Christmas Fair at The Palm House in Liverpool (UK), which began on the weekend of Friday 27th Nov 2015.

The event began on Friday evening and continued throughout the weekend and was an opportunity for artists, makers, creatives and food providers from the North West of England to display their crafts and products.

There were many stallholders offering gifts, accessories, jewellery, dresses and shoes for toddlers, hand-made greetings cards, personalised cards, artworks, photography, hot food and cakes and a Gin promotion to just name a few.

The Telegram Office arrived on a cold, wet and windy Friday night. The weather didn’t dampen our spirits though and we proceeded to set up our stall for our first artisan event at the Palm House.

As the telegrams are usually offered online, the challenge was to offer and create the telegrams at our stall while explaining to the visitors how the service worked.

As the telegram is customised, it takes a little more effort on the part of our customers, PATRONS :-) than say buying a traditional greetings card. We needed to come up with a method that made it easy for the customer to order a telegram.

We set up on our 6x2 ft. trestle table and displayed our full range of 12 telegrams on 2 artists’ canvasses and numbered them 1-12 on the display. We had already designed some order cards in which the customer could simply put the number of the telegram design on the card along with their greeting or message plus the recipient’s details and dispatch date. This seemed to work well enough although as the Palm House was quite dark we soon realised we should have either printed in black ink or brought suitable lighting to help illuminate the table and display.

It is not always easy to come up with a message to a friend or loved one and we were asked what message would be suitable to write. We have started to gather and put together some examples from old telegrams and letters. We will start including some simple greetings and messages along with poems and code words to help make the messages fun yet realistic. We plan on printing these out on cards for our next event. Customers will be able to more easily create their message by simply ticking a greeting message and adding their own to and from names.

Despite the bad weather the event was very successful and provided a real alternative Christmas shopping experience. There was something for everyone with an emphasis on providing quality and value. The setting couldn’t have been better with stalls tucked in between palm trees, which helped make this a unique event and a great alternative to the High Street shopping experience.
