Hobbies for kids will help keep them active, occupied and entertained for countless hours. Every child needs a hobby to help distract them from screen time and inactivity. A challenging or educational hobby will help in your child’s development and may even help keep them from a bad peer group and stay out of trouble.

A good hobby could be learning to play a musical instrument. The guitar can often be self-taught from a book if a child has the patience and enough interest, but for piano playing or other instruments, you will probably have to invest in lessons. Practice is, of course, an essential part of mastering any musical instrument.

There are all sorts of arts and crafts that kids might like to do for a hobby. Crafts are a popular and low cost activity, which can encourage creativity and help kids learn new skills. They can learn to draw and paint or make scrapbooks. For those old enough they can learn embroidery, sewing, knitting and crocheting.

Collecting can give kids even more reason to go beachcombing on your next weekend or day out. They can collect sea glass and shells to use in craft projects. Collecting stamps and coins is still popular and can help the child learn about different countries and eras giving them a geography and history lesson. Rock collecting will require some research in geology and may even stimulate an interest in science.

Just about anything a child has an interest in can be collected. Collectables might include animal figurines, fridge magnets and beanbag toys. If your child is interested in butterflies for instance, they may not only collect butterfly stationery and posters, but will also be motivated to read books about nature.

Construction sets like Lego and Meccano can also make great past times. Many people may think of these only as toys, but children who have grown up with these sets have often added components to them through the years to can create some very impressive models. They are also gaining skills in reasoning and perception as they build.

Making models such as cars and airplanes has always been very popular. If your child is interested in making models, be very encouraging in the beginning. It can get a little complicated and require a great deal of precision so be prepared to be at hand to offer assistance and encouragement. Get the easiest kit to begin with and go from there.

Athletic activity in the form of a sport is also a great hobby that will keep your kids fit. Football and swimming come to mind, but don't forget about distance running or gymnastics.

Whatever you kids take to, a good hobby or interest will help keep them active and occupied in their early to teenage years.
