Apron Handicraft Gift Idea

If you’re wondering what to get for someone’s birthday then why not make an apron. You can’t get any more unique than one you create yourself.

When we think of aprons we think of mums and grand mums in the kitchen but with cooking becoming ever more popular for both sexes you can surprise a man with his very own customised apron. As it’s the middle of summer there’ll be plenty of opportunities to put it to use in barbecues as well as the kitchen. They can also be used in the workshop or for gardening. Children can also use aprons for arts and crafts to help save you on unnecessary washing. Here are some simple instructions for making a personalised apron for just about anyone.

You’ll need to get hold of some sturdy fabric first. The fabric will need to be wide enough to wrap 1/2 to 1/3 of the way around the body of the person you are making it for and long enough to cover them from neck to the knees. For a larger adult, 25 to 30 inches wide by 36 to 40 inches long should be just about right. You can scale down these proportions for smaller adults. You can narrow the width for slimmer adults. For a child of about ten you could start with fabric at about 18 inches wide by 25 to 30 inches long.

The easiest type of fabric to use is cotton. Denim and twill are tough and great for outdoor wear if you feel up to using them. Softer cottons are fine for indoors and may be easier to work with. Remember to set aside some extra fabric to go around the neck and for ties for the back and pockets. You’ll also need thread and a sewing machine.

Aprons are much more useful with pockets which are handy for keeping odds and ends needed to carry around or for picking up.

To make an apron, first fold the fabric lengthwise. This will enable you to cut the shape with one cut giving you a symmetrical shape. You will be making the bib section of the apron. This bib part for an adult will need to be about 9 inches wide. Measure from the fold 5 1/2". This is half the width of the bib plus an inch to fold under twice to form a hem. The piece you will cut off the side to shape the bib will be a half bullet shape with the tip of the bullet being where the ties will be attached. The length of the half bullet shape needs to be about a foot long and the width will be from the spot you marked 5 1/2" from the fold to the outside edge of the fabric. When these sections are cut off they will leave you with an apron shaped piece of fabric.

You can go as wild as you like when designing your apron. You can add the pockets and any other touches you like. Once done you’ll need to fold edges around the fabric and stitch a hem to make it sturdy and help maintain the form of the garment. Cut two pieces of fabric about a yard long and two inches wide. Fold these length wise and then fold the edges to the inside and press down and stitch along the length to make the ties. Attach the ties at the waist of the apron to the inside.

Finally cut another piece of fabric 18 to 20 inches long by 5 inches wide and fold it in half lengthwise and press. Press again with the raw edges of the long side tucking under by 1/2 an inch. Stitch down the open side. Attach this piece to the sides of the top of the bib, sewing it to the back of the bib and top stitching on the front side of the bib.

Your hand made apron will make a great gift for your loved one and will hopefully see lots of action in the kitchen or garden.
